i have as small vmware 4.1 enviroment. I have 30gb id like to transfer into a vm on my host.
My san has 10gb iscsi connectivity. My front end switch where my VMs connect is 1gb.
if i connect a usb drive to the hose (hp dl380 g7) and do a usb device pass through and do my file copy from the usb drive that way...i get about 3MB/sec
If i connect my usb drive to my laptop and configure my laptop to connect over the tcpip network through the front end switch to a share on my VM and i start the file copy i get about 3MB/sec
No matter what i do, i cant get my vm to accept files at much faster speeds.
I had to transfer 500+ gb one time and it took over 24 hours.
What can i check here?
I know this is quite the vague question but i need to start somewhere.
i have noticed that the type of USB drive does matter. A HP external is slower than a western digital etc but i dont think that is to blame. Both usb devices are USB 2/3 devices. Copying from them to my local laptop yeilds 30/40MB/sec
Im not sure what to check next. Can anyone offer any advice?
Maybe a better question is what is the best way to get data from one network to the other where they are not connected at all over seperated by slow wan links. I am trying to move A LOt of data into vmware. USB drives isnt cutting it.
I am starting to think i might be better off using vmware converter and making vmdks of the drives, transfering those, and uploading them via vcenter and attaching them to the vms. That might be quicker.
