ok to delete RDM mapping?

I need to cold migrate some VMs with virtual mode RDMs to new servers. I will be presenting the RDMs with different LUN numbers on the target hosts. My co worker suggested that when removing the RDMs before cold migration , you cannot delete the mapping file, else it will cause data corruption, so he selects the remove from vm option(not remove and delete).

My understanding is the RDM file is just a mapping file, and is safe to delete. My thinking is that deleting it saves space, and speeds up migration time.

Can RDM files simply be deleted without data corruption?, most vmware articles suggest they can, and they are just mapping files.

When the VM gets to the new hosts, a new RDM virtual mode will be added, when the lun is presented to the new hosts.
