Converting Hyper-V to ESX

I've been supplied what I think is a Hyper-V virtual machine (could be Microsoft Virtual server though), anyway it's VHD.

I converted this into ESX but get the Blue screen of death 0000007B when it first boots, inaccessible boot device.

I've 'googled' this, but most posts relate to converting from ESX. This general workaround when converting from ESX seems to involve making changes to the VM whilst it's running in ESX.

So in my situation, do I need to get a Hyper-V running in my environment first?
