High Disk Latency

$

0

All hosts in our vSphere cluster, we are seeing "Physical Device Write Latency" with many peaks on several VMFS stores between 200ms and 3000ms (yes, 3 seconds). As you would expect, our users are seeing poor VM performance, guest disk errors, non-responsive VMs, database diconnections. But the NetApp storage statistics show performance is OK.

In some cases, switching the path for a VMFS to the other HBA makes the latency drop to 0 instantly. In other cases, this has no effect, but if we v-Motion the affected guest to another host, the latency and performance are fine, at least for a short time.

We firest saw this issue when we upgraded the cluster to ESX 4.1 U1. But we have since downgraded back to ESX 4.0 U2 and still see the same problems. Around the same time we also upgraded the NetApp from ONTAP 7.3.3 to 8.0.1P3 7-Mode.

Has anybody seen similar issues before?

Environment:

3 Clusters in the Datacenter. Cluster A has 4 x ESX 3.5 U5 hosts. Cluster B has 5 x ESX 3.5 U5 hosts. Cluster C has 10 x ESX 4.0 U2 hosts.

The SAN is a pair of NetApp FAS3140 filers in Active/Active mode running ONTAP 8.0.1P3 7-Mode. Some aggregates are FC disks, some are SATA disks.

All hosts in all 3 clusters are connected to all VMFS datastores. However we intend to separate out the 3.5 and 4.0 clusters to have their own dedicated datastores so that we can enable ALUA and Round Robin for the vSphere hosts.

ALUA is currently disabled on all NetApp iGroups.

HA and DRS are enabled and DRS is Fully Automated.

We have run the NetApp Virtual Storage Console 2.1 to set the recommended settings (timeouts and MPIO) on the ESX hosts. All paths are Fixed and are correctly set to the correct filer.

The Fibre Switches were recently upgraded to the latest firmware in an attempt to fix this issue, no effect.

iSCSI Network Configuration. Trunk or not Trunk?

Hi guys,

First of all, pardon me for lack of knowledge in VMware and i might be asking a silly question. Anyway, i would like to seek for your advice on how should i setup my iSCSI storage. Basically i'm using a DL 380 G7 server for ESX 4.1 and i have allocated 4 ports(Giga) for iSCSI network. These 4 ports will be connected to DELL Equalogic storage.

Now apart from trunking on the switch level, what else I need to do to ensure that the 4 ports are utilized as single network pipe to storage?

Kindly advice

TQ.

Increasing netapp lun size

we have esxi4. 1 hosts connected to netapp filer via FC.  On the netapp we have luns on volumes, and these luns on esx are mapped as vmfs datastores on ESX.  One of the luns is running out of space, but the volume it is on has space, so i was going to increase the size of the LUN, which you can do on the fly on netapp, but on esx, would it automatically pick up the new lun size.  I dont want to add any extents, i just want the current lun to increase in size automatically.

Any advise.

ESX mount command

Hi All,

We have a mixed environment of 2 ESX 4.1 and 1x ESXi . I am running the mount command on the the two ESX 4.1 servers and it doesn't show the san storages which have been mounted under the /vmfs/volume , same with using  the df -h  or df.

I can see none on /vmfs/volumes tye vcfs for esxi but nothing along same line for the esx thus to conclude why do I see the /vmfs/volume under esxi and not under esx when using mount ?

2 why does esx and esxi does not show the mounted data stores using the mount command ?

although again with the esx, df -h does not show anything so can not work out how I would see the mounted volumes under the esx.

Thanks for your help

Changed block tracking - multiple ctk.vmdk files on VM with full backup job - questions

$

Hello

About week ago i found that one of my VM is full of ctk.vmd files. I know what are those files for (changed block tracking), but i dont understand why backup exec 2010 is creating them only on one virtual machine. I got about 10 vm backing up in backupexec, all of them are full backup ( not incremental nor differental ), configured the same and only one is getting those files. Last time it was about 10 per each of 3 vmdk :(. I cloned machine to get rid of it but it took a lot of time, and today after first backup of this cloned vm i got new one. So my questione is :

- If im not using incremental/differential backup do i really need them ?

- is it 100 % save to remove them form datastore manually ?

- what may be the reason that only one vm has this files whille all other are configured the same, also on Linux OS ?

- How to prevent from getting more of them as they really mess my datastore   ?

Im using vSphere ESX 4.1 and backup exec 2010 R2.

Multiple snapshot files - unable to delete

Hi,

Few day ago while browsing datastore i found that one of my VM have multiple snapshot files and ctk.vmdk (20) made by backup exec for each of three vmdk - thats not present in snapshot manager. After performing clone files disappeared and everything is working, but as i still have old copy of vm ( with all files ) I want to know how to get rid of them without cloning. I'm sure there must be some option for it.

I can manually delete all ctk files but cant delete snapshots. I remember that once i found article what to try if normal solution ( like making new snap and than consolidate, or usinfg cmd vim-cmd vmsvc/snapshot.remove ) doesnt work.

So my question is : Do u know others way to try ? Or give me some referencess to article about more advenced ways of doing that ? All help is welcome

Dear Expert Alls,

I have plan to upgrade ESX 4.1 to ESXI5.5 with cd/iso

So My Server have 2 Raids array same HOST

1 ESX 4.1 install on raid 1 (146GB)

2 DATASTORE1 raid 5  that was created with ESX 4.1 VMFS3 and used to all VMs.

If i need to upgrade to ESXi5.5 with CD/ISO How way to safe for this case.?

and All Vms that run virtual machine version  7.

I test simulate server with SDcard and install ESX4.1 on SD card when it finished i reboot and insert new OS ESXi5.5.

Then i choose upgrade ans it not have preserve VMFS Option ? Cause ESX 4.1 on SD case not have Datastore inside it will be not preserv option.

Any expert can suggest me.

Playing games on vmware. The best way to do it?

$

Hello,

I am a little bit new in the whole VMware scene. But really my goal was to have an ESX 4.1 server with virtual machines on it with the purpose for remotely gaming. I heard that de vmware view solution was the best thing to speed up the remote performance. But when I was ready to try to install games on de virtual machine I noticed that my dream was chattered by the poor performance and unsupported issues vmware gave me. Because of there own vmware videocard.

So my question is: what is the best way for me to try to hold on my dream and comming close towards gaming with vmware?

And does some one know if there comes a product from vmware that really is made for gaming in the future?

I hope that someone can give me info how to proceed my dream: To use good remotely performance with gaming without using your own hardware.

Thanks in advance,

thin provisioned VM not registering provisioned space

I have a RHEL 5.5 thin provisioned VM which exhibits this problem:

[root@imp2 ~]# vgs
  VG         #PV #LV #SN Attr   VSize  VFree
  VolGroup00   1   2   0 wz--n- 11.88G    0
[root@imp2 ~]# df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
                      7.8G  7.5G     0 100% /

That is, lvm is able to see that it has almost 12 gig disk but df reports only an 8 gig disk.

At this point, yum update fails indicating not enough space.

reboot has not helped.

I'm not seeing this reported widely via Google so what did I miss?

Clone VM, temporary snapshot still there!?

I am cloning VMs with VMware.

Some VMs have sometimes after the clone process a snapshot "clone-snapshot-[date]" and the note is:

This temporary snapshot is taken as part of the clone operation. The temporary snapshot will be deleted once the clone operation is complete.

Any ideas why this snapshot wasnt deleted from the cloning process?

vSphere 4.1 and end of ESX?

$

Hello,

I was reading the what's new and release notes of the new vSphere 4.1 and it seems that all future updates from 4.1 on will be on the ESXi platform only  unless I'm mis-reading it.  I like to know if this is true and if so how will it affect our ESX infrastructure and the huge investment we already made in terms of ESX, licensing, etc...

"Future major releases of VMware vSphere will include only the VMware ESXi architecture."

You can't use UM to upgrade from ESX 4u2 to ESXi 4.1 can you?  It just seems that it will force everyone to rebuild their ESX infrastructure with ESXi host moving forward.  For those with a few ESX hosts it may be fine but for those with a few thousand ESX hosts it's going to be a nightmare.

Call "HostNetworkSystem.UpdateVirtualSwitch" for object error when trying to add second NIC

$

Hi there - first post in here, so please be gentle :-).

We're just in the process of rolling out a clean deployment ESX4.1 into our environment (no previous VMWare installation) using Dell M610 blades at our main office, and M600 blades at what will become our DR site - both sites are hosting the VM disks on Equallogic iSCSI SANs.

I've successfully configured 4 of our M610 blades with ESX 4.1 and they are working fine.  These blades have dual onboard NICs, and after the initial ESX install, i was able to go in to the Virtual Switch and add in the second nic as vmnic1 (as the first one had already been detected during setup).  This workd fine for the 4 hosts on the M610 blades.  However, i've come today to do my first install on one of the older M600 blades and i've hit a problem.

Installation went through without any problems and i was able to add the host into my vCenter.  I can change all the settings without a problem (have created the VMKernal Port for my iSCSI SAN connection etc, but as soon as i try to add in the second NIC, it pauses for a while, and then i get the following error message:

Call "HostNetworkSystem.UpdateVirtualSwitch" for object "networkSystem-56" on vCenter Server "VCEN01.ournetwork.local" failed. (network name has been changed for post).  When this happens, it again locks up for several seconds, and when the system comes back, i can no longer communicate with the ESX host (event viewer in vCenter shows "Host is not responding" and i find that i cant ping the host unless i reboot it.

If anyone has any suggestions i'd appreciate it as i dont want to proceed to far down the line with our setup in case theres an underlying issue and i need to redo everything.

Changing MTU value on vmnic

$

I am running esx 4.1 servers, and am in process of enabling jumbo frames for the esx servers.  I know the value of mtu as to be changed from 1500 to 9000.  I think i now the command to change the mtu value of the vswitch which is :

esxcfg-vswitch -m 9000 vSwitch

The problem is changing the mtu value of vmnic on this vswitch.  I currently on this vswitch have a vmkernal port group called vmkernal1 which has an IP setting of 172.16.10.1.  Currently this has the value of mtu of 1500.  But I need to change this to 9000.  From reading other posts it says i have to recreate the vmkernel port group to change the mtu value.  Is this correct one esx 4.1.  So if i use the below command to change my existing vmnic's mtu value :

esxcfg-vmknic -a -i 172.16.0.1 -n 255.255.255.0 -m 9000 vmkernel1

Would this work.  Or do I need to recreate, which would mean i would need to delete my existing port group first.

Can anyone advise, and exactly what command I need to run to change the vmnic mtu values, given the above parameters.
