IBM LTO 4 Drive at LSI1068E inside a VM with SCSI passthrough

Hello,

since i upgraded from ESX 3.5 to ESX 4 i have a problem with the LTO tape drive.

The server is a IBM x3650 which does not support VMDirectPath. The tape drive is a IBM Ultrium 4 3580 with an SAS interface.

When i configure this tape inside a VM using the SCSI passthrough, it sometimes works. I Use ARCserve 15 SP1.

I can:

- Erase a tape at every time

- Format a tape at every time

- Backup many data when selecting one folder and append the data to a formatted tape.

But when i configure a Backup Job to save all data i got errors. ARCserve formats the tape, find a broken session and repairs the session once or twice. (On a newly formatted tape.) Sometime he begins to backup the data and sometime he wrote that he can't position the media.

The VMKernel log reports this:

NMP: nmp_CompleteCommandForPath: Command 0x11 (0x41027f370240) to NMP device "naa.xxx" failed on physical path "vmhba1:C0:T0:L0" H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Valid sense data: 0x8 0x0 0x5.

Hope someone has an idea.

Purple Screen of Death #DF

Hi,

We have a cluster of 2 servers running ESX 4.1 U1 managed by vCenter. Last week we received a PSOD mentioning #DF Exception 8 IP (please see attached screeenshot). While tracking down the problem, I have gotten as far as KB Article: 1004250 which, under additional information, refers to "Intel® 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer’s Manual".

Now, my question is how do I diagnose it if I have an AMD Opteron processor?

Thanks for your help,

HBA "transport" - Block adapter, What does this mean

Hi

On some of my ESX servers I have som local storage which are typed as "transport - Block adapter". What is this and how do I can it

Is it changed by a linux command on the console?

I remeber something about a command that can block and unblock a HBA/iscsi adapter, but is that used for changing status?

Best regards

Do Virtual Serial ports support serial BREAK?

$

Hi,

I have two VMs connected together with virtual serial ports via named pipes. I want to use this for Linux kernel debugging.

I cannot get into KDB on the VM to be debugged from the VM that will be doing the debugging, however, the serial port setup works otherwise, and I can get into KDB if I 'echo g > /proc/sysrq-trigger'.

It seems to be the case that any BREAK requests I try to send are lost.

Can I get either a definitive statement that BREAK requests are not handled by ESX (We are actually using vSphere 4 Enterprise Plus or something), or if they are supported, is there some double-secret handshake I have to use?

Esxi 4.1 /var/lib/vmware/hostd/stats/hostAgentStats-20.stats size too big

Hello

recently i have faces a issue in which vspere esxi server started going to ont connected state in vcenter one by one .

when i checked disk utilization and found that hostdstat was100% filled

might be because of which it was showing as not connected to vcenter. but still i was alble to connect all the vm's running under that host.

the issue was solved after restarting the services.sh and deleteing the hostAgentStats-20.stats file

and things were back to normal

I want to knowhow we can avoide it from writing too much into mv /var/lib/vmware/hostd/stats/hostAgentStats-20.stats, or is there a way i can increase a size of hostdstat partation as by default its 165MB

thanks

High Disk Latency

$

All hosts in our vSphere cluster, we are seeing "Physical Device Write Latency" with many peaks on several VMFS stores between 200ms and 3000ms (yes, 3 seconds). As you would expect, our users are seeing poor VM performance, guest disk errors, non-responsive VMs, database diconnections. But the NetApp storage statistics show performance is OK.

In some cases, switching the path for a VMFS to the other HBA makes the latency drop to 0 instantly. In other cases, this has no effect, but if we v-Motion the affected guest to another host, the latency and performance are fine, at least for a short time.

We firest saw this issue when we upgraded the cluster to ESX 4.1 U1. But we have since downgraded back to ESX 4.0 U2 and still see the same problems. Around the same time we also upgraded the NetApp from ONTAP 7.3.3 to 8.0.1P3 7-Mode.

Has anybody seen similar issues before?

Environment:

3 Clusters in the Datacenter. Cluster A has 4 x ESX 3.5 U5 hosts. Cluster B has 5 x ESX 3.5 U5 hosts. Cluster C has 10 x ESX 4.0 U2 hosts.

The SAN is a pair of NetApp FAS3140 filers in Active/Active mode running ONTAP 8.0.1P3 7-Mode. Some aggregates are FC disks, some are SATA disks.

All hosts in all 3 clusters are connected to all VMFS datastores. However we intend to separate out the 3.5 and 4.0 clusters to have their own dedicated datastores so that we can enable ALUA and Round Robin for the vSphere hosts.

ALUA is currently disabled on all NetApp iGroups.

HA and DRS are enabled and DRS is Fully Automated.

We have run the NetApp Virtual Storage Console 2.1 to set the recommended settings (timeouts and MPIO) on the ESX hosts. All paths are Fixed and are correctly set to the correct filer.

The Fibre Switches were recently upgraded to the latest firmware in an attempt to fix this issue, no effect.

vmkping to san storage packet loss

Hi,

    Today, I have one of the ESXi4. Hosts (USB booted, not no physical storage on local) have a problem.

    Datastorage Indentification (inactive).

Screen Shot 2011-08-20 at 4.37.42 PM.png

   ssh to the host and try to do a vmking to the SAN storage.

   When I do a vmkping -D

   I got this :

Screen Shot 2011-08-20 at 4.47.45 PM.png

   But when I vmkping to the ISCSI to the SAN Storage (DELL MD3200i), I got packet loss.

Screen Shot 2011-08-20 at 4.43.34 PM.png

I got packet loss and I can not connect to DELL SAN Storage (MD3200i). so I got no datastorge on this host.

And I have another ESXi4 host with local harddisk I do not have this problem.

Hope someone can give me some help. Thanks!

vMotion - Different Subnet, Different VLAN

$

I am running ESXi 4.1. I have two hosts. Currently, the management network of my hosts are on the 192.168.5.x subnet and that subnet exists in its own VLAN. My vMotion setup is also included in this subnet and VLAN. What I want to do is to move my vMotion setup to a different subnet and VLAN.

How would I go about doing this? Whenever I change the IP address of the vMotion vSwitch, I lose connectivity to it since I have to change the default gateway as well. When I update the default gateway, the default gateway of the management gateway is updated as well. Do I have to have the management network and the vMotion network on the same subnet?

contact Web service of a vCenter

Hello,

I'm not sure, it the good location for my post..

anyway, I'm begining using webService to interact with my esx 4.1.

This one is under a vCenter.

I'm interacting through php script with soap client.

Here is my code :

<?php
$serverIP = "XXX";
$serverUser = "XXX";
$serverPassword = "XXX";
$client = new SoapClient("https://$serverIP/sdk/vimService.wsdl", array("trace" => 1, "location" => "https://$serverIP/sdk/") );
$soapmsg["_this"] = array( "_" => "ServiceInstance", "type" => "ServiceInstance");
$result = $client->RetrieveServiceContent($soapmsg);
$ServiceContent = $result->returnval;
$soapmsg = NULL;
$soapmsg["_this"] = $ServiceContent->sessionManager;
$soapmsg["userName"] = $serverUser;
$soapmsg["password"] = $serverPassword;
$result = $client->Login($soapmsg);
$UserSession = $result->returnval;
echo "User " . $UserSession->userName . " is connected\n";$soapmsg = NULL;
$soapmsg["_this"] = $ServiceContent->sessionManager;
$result = $client->Logout($soapmsg);
?>

It work well directly on my esx, but when I try to login to the WS of my vCenter, (replacing the credentials) I've got the following error:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fatal error: Uncaught SoapFault exception: [WSDL] SOAP-ERROR: Parsing Schema: can't import schema from 'https://192.168.10.12/sdk/reflect-messagetypes.xsd' in /root/VMwarePHPWebServices/vmwareTestAPI.php:10

  thrown in /root/VMwarePHPWebServices/vmwareTestAPI.php on line 10

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I looked on the web and other people faced this problems, it seems to be the fault of the WSDL file syntax?

http://www.devraju.com/programming/fatal-error-uncaught-soapfault-exception-wsdl-soap-error-parsing-schema-cant-import-schema-from-httpschemas-xmlsoap-orgsoapencoding/

I wondered if this problem is knowed, I am on the good track, do someone have a solution?

Or maybe it's not the same way to contact the vCenter?

Thanks in advance!

Change in size of ova when exported

$

Hi All,

I have an RHEL image with some software installed on one of my VM. When i shutdown and exported for the first time the size was 14.4GB. After some time i restarted and played for some time and exported back, surprisingly it was 9.45GB. I have no idea how this dramatic change has happened. For my perspective the installed software and RHEL are not more than 7GB.

I wonder why it went to 14.4GB and down to 9.45GB.

I just can't leave this unknown, please let me know your valuable feedback on this

The exported ova is working absolutely fine. I haven't changed anything

Details:

1) I am using ESX 4.1
2) My Virtual disk size is 60GB, and in both the cases(smaller size and larger size) i exported using thin proisioning.
3) Every time i export the image it is the same 9.45GB that is exported.

Thanks & Regards

The errors happen on all our 3850 but not at the same time. It seems to be only affecting the backups as when the error occurs the backup of the vm stops and Netbackup throws up “system call failed(11) error”.

I’ve talked to the network guys and they have sent me the error log for the switch and it is not showing any errors for the time that the link is going down. Also there are no alerts been triggered.

The distributed switch is configured with uplinks nic3 and nic7, connected to the VM Network. The switch that the uplinks are connected to is configured with port channel as it carries different vlan traffic. The teaming is set to route based on IP hash and the network failover is set to link status only.

Any ideas?

[ESX 4.0 U2] Change Both Host and Datastore grayed out

$

Hi,

We have a VMware 4.0 U2 environment with 4 ESX hosts. We have 2 clusters with 2 hosts located in each cluster. Each cluster defines a physical building and both buildings are about 4KMs appart. Each building also has its own IBM DS3400 SAN. Until today, we were not able to do a Vmotion between clusters while the VM was running, because the hosts from Cluster A couldn't see the shared storage in Cluster B, and vice versa.

This morning, we plugged a Mono fiber so hosts from Cluster A are now able to see storage from Cluster B, and vice versa. All this works. I am able to do a storage Vmotion (using Change Datastore function) from Cluster A to Cluster B while the VM is running. I am also able to change host and select a host in a different Cluster. I can do both functions one after the other and make sure that the storage where the VM is located is in the same cluster/building that the host is running the VM. I want to avoid a host in Cluster B running a VM located on the shared storage of Cluster A, so if I could find a way to do all in 1 step, that would be best.

The function Change both host and datastore is greyed out. I would like to use that function to select the appropriate host in the other cluster as well as the appropriate datastore at the same time and avoid having to change host and then change datastore.

Of course, Vmotion is running fine and all hosts can see shared storage of all clusters. I don't understand why Change both host and datastore is still greyed out. We have a Nexus 1000v in place, if this makes a difference. All the VLANs are the same within both clusters. A VM will be able to Vmotion in another cluster with network reconfiguration.

Any clues ?

Thank you!

Guillaume.

This is on ESX 4.0.0 Update 1.

When I issue a command such as "vim-cmd /hostsvc/hostsummary | grep inMaintenanceMode" or vimsh –n –e /hostsvc/maintenance_mode_enter” / “vimsh –n –e
/hostsvc/maintenance_mode_exit” all returned the same error message “failed to connect: cannot connect to host localhost: connection refused”.

I've checked the checked the resolv.conf & hosts file.

I'm able to ssh to the server as well as use WinSCP without any problems.

I can connect with the VI Client also without a problem.

VM Replica's Inaccessible after Network Failure

$

Hi guys

I'm quite new to VMware and am still learning everyday... but have been put into a Live Environment which I now have to support

The problem I have right now is that we had a power failure last Friday, and after that, my Host machines aren't seeing the VM Replica's which sit on my NAS Device.

I am running VMware ESX 4.1.0 with 3 Host machines, and a Server which is running the vSphere Client... all in my Primary Server Room.

In my DR Server Room, on the other end of the building, I have an HP Storageworks NAS Device, on which my VM Replica's reside.

After the last power failure, and after my UPS's ran out of juice, my Host machines are no longer seeing the replicas on the NAS device.

I have restarted my switches, restarted the NAS Device, restarted my vSphere Client Host machine... but i still get the replica(inaccessible) message next to each of my replica's within the vSphere Client.

Has anybody had this issue before? Anyone know how to resolve this without having to restart the actual Host machines themselves?

I am trying to avoid restarting my Host Machines as those VM's need to run 24/7.

However, should that be the only option, then I will schedule downtime and have it done.

Any assistance is highly appreciated guys. Thank you in advance.

Host not responding and disconnected / Service Console pings but can't log in - HP Smart Array P410i issue

$

Hi,

I've a problem on a 2-nodes ESX 4.0 cluster, HA enabled.

Esx Patches are up to date.

My hosts disconnect from vCenter periodically (3 times last month). They're marked as "not responding" , then "disconnected" if i try to manually reconnect them. I have to reboot host.

  • Service console pings, but SSH or console logins fails : i can type my login at the prompt, but there's no password prompt after. Using Vsphere Client directly on a host results as a timeout. Accessing Management Homepage from HP also.

  • Some VM are still pinging, etc., but some VMs don't. All VMs are showing as "disconnected" on vCenter. They don't reboot on Host1.

  • I use HP BL 460c G6 for all nodes, on a c7000 Chassis. Smart Array p410i Controller.

Vcenter events :

24/10/2009 04:59:32 : HA agent on Host2.test.com in cluster TEST has an error : HA agent on the host failed

24/10/2009 04:59:39 : Host Host2.test.com in TEST is not responding

All VM's hosted by server2 are marked are disconnected.

Then 14 hours late, other host goes down (edit : but these to consecutive events don't seem to be linked, i'm maybe just unlucky !) :

24/10/2009 19:06:51 : Host Host1.test.com in TEST is not responding

24/10/2009 19:06:51 : Unable to contact a primary HA agent in cluster TEST

The only VM hosted by Host1 was still pinging, but when i tried to remote control it, VM goes down.

*Update : possible answer*

After a call with HP support, and VMWare support, it seems that a controller issue is the cause of the crash of the service console.

There's a firmware update (v2.50) concerning Smart Array P212, P410, P410i, P411, and P712m ---> here

  • Fix for a potential controller hang condition (lockup error code 0XBC) seen during heavy I/O.

  • Fix for a server operating system hang condition encountered during IO stress tests, such as SQLIO.

  • Fix for a potential controller hang condition (lockup error code
         0XAB) seen when controller is configured in Zero Memory Mode (no cache
         module installed)

  • Fix for a potential controller hang condition that may be seen when a 2nd SATA drive fails in a RAID 6 configuration.

Thanks for your help.
